APPLICANTS

103 more kindergarten students applied to attend SFUSD this year

·          We received 3,972 kindergarten applications compared to 3,869 last year

 

There was a decrease in the number of applications for middle and high school; the decrease at the secondary level is consistent with Lapkoff’s 2002 demographic analyses and enrollment forecasts which projected a decline at the secondary level

·          We received 3,145 6th grade applications compared to 3,282 last year (137 fewer applications)

·          We received 4,238 9th grade applications compared to 4,661 last year (423 fewer applications)

 

CHOICE

More families received an assignment to a school of their choice

Overall (K-12), 87% of applicants received one of their choices, compared to 84% last year

·          87% of kindergarten applicants (compared to 85% last year)

·          93% of 6th grade applicants (compared to 94% last year)

·          94% of 9th grade applicants (compared to 88% last year)

 

Overall (K-12), 67% of applicants received their first choice, compared to 62% last year

·          69% of kindergarten applicants (compared to 62%last year)

·          81% of 6th grade applicants (compared to 83%last year)

·          67% of 9th grade applicants (compared to 62% last year)

 

Overall (K-12), 13% of applicants did not receive one of their choices , compared to 16% last year

·          13% of kindergarten applicants (534 applicants) compared to 15% last year (approximately 565)

·          7% of 6th grade applicants (206 applicants) compared to 6% last year (approximately 206)

·          6% of 9th grade applicants (274 applicants) compared to 12% last year (approximately 539)

 

Parents are choosing a greater variety of schools

·          The following schools received a triple digit increase in total demand this year

-         Dianne Feinstein Elementary School received 457 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 139 requests last year, an increase of 229%.

-         Grattan Elementary School received 351 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 227 requests last year, an increase of 55%.

-         Thurgood Marshall   High School received 501 9th grade requests this year compared to 365 requests last year, an increase of 37%.

-         Balboa High School received 817 9th grade requests this year compared to 630 requests last year, an increase of 30%.

-         Aptos Middle School received 823 6th grade requests this year compared to 717 requests last year, an increase of 15%.

-         Galileo High School received 1,587 9th grade requests this year compared to 1,459 requests last year, an increase of 9%.

 

·          42 schools received a double digit increase in total demand this year

-         George Peabody Elementary School received 128 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 68 requests last year, an increase of 88%

-         Bessie Carmichael School received 80 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 53 requests last year, an increase of 51%

-         Sunset Elementary School received 254 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 169 requests last year, an increase of 50%

-         Lafayette Elementary School received 267 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 187 requests last year, an increase of 43%

-         Miraloma Elementary School received 320 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 243 requests last year, an increase of 32%

-         Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School received 313 Kindergarten requests this year compared to 262 requests last year, an increase of 19%

DEMAND

The demand for seats far exceeds the capacity at many of our schools.  84% of the program offerings received more total requests than seats available and 27% of the program offerings received more first choice requests than seats available.  Examples of how this demand impacts assignments are illustrated in the tables below.
