Interdistrict Transfer Requests

If a resident of San Francisco wishes for their child to attend a public school outside of San Francisco, the parent/guardian must submit an interdistrict permit to EPC. The parent/guardian should bring a current verification of the San Francisco home address. Beginning in January, permits are processed, approved or disapproved on a weekly basis and forwarded to the requested district. Final approval is made by the requested district.

If a student wishes to attend a San Francisco Public School and the parent/guardian does not live in San Francisco, the parent/guardian must obtain an interdistrict permit from their current public school district of residence. The interdistrict transfer agreement permit is required for anyone living outside of San Francisco who wishes to attend or continue attending a San Francisco Public School. It is an annual permit and must be on file for each school year.

Interdistrict transfers are granted on a space-available basis, and SFUSD reserves the right to determine whether or not to accept interdistrict transfer requests. SFUSD also reserves the right to limit the number of incoming students as well as establish priorities according to types of requests.

Interdistrict transfers are not granted if the cost of educating the student would exceed the amount of state aid received as a result of the transfer.

Available Schools

Interdistrict transfers cannot be granted to high demand schools, i.e., schools filled to capacity at the end of Round One in 2010 and/or schools that had students in the waiting pool at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year.

Who Can Apply for an Interdistrict Transfer Permit?

  • Students whose parents/guardians are employed within the city of San Francisco. These interdistrict transfer requests will not be reviewed until June 2010, i.e., until all students from the city of San Francisco have been given a school of assignment. Students are not guaranteed enrollment in SFUSD. We recommend that you also enroll your child/children in your district of residence in case we are unable to assign your child to a requested school.

  • · Elementary and middle school students who receive child care services within the city of San Francisco. These interdistrict transfer requests will not be reviewed June 2010, i.e., until all students from the city of San Francisco have been given a school of assignment. We recommend that you also enroll your child/children in your district of residence in case we are unable to assign your child to a requested school.

What is the Application Process?

  1. You must apply for the interdistrict permit in your district of residence. If you do not know which district you reside in you should call your County Office of Education to inquire. Each school district has individual timelines and requirements for interdistrict applications. If and when the permit is approved by your district of residence, it will be forwarded   to EPC for our approval. EPC will contact you by mail if any additional documentation, such as employment verification, is needed.
  2. You must turn in an SFUSD enrollment application to EPC. Required documents are the same as for San Francisco residents. The enrollment form must reflect your out of district address. Each application from SFUSD employees who do not live in San Francisco must be accompanied by a letter from their school principal or their department head verifying that they are an employee of SFUSD.
  3. The deadlines and key dates printed on the enrollment application do not apply to interdistrict applicants. Your child will not be assigned through a lottery, but your completed permit and application will be held until summer when interdistrict placement begins. Placement is made in the order that the applications are received.
  4. Permits for students receiving special education services must be approved by the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Director prior to placement.

Renewing Interdistrict Permits

All interdistrict permits must be renewed each school year. The approval of the interdistrict permit is contingent on a student maintaining satisfactory standards of academic progress, behavior, and attendance. Based on these criteria, principals annually recommend approval and/or denial of interdistrict permits.

Please call the EPC at 415-241-6513 for additional information about interdistrict enrollment.
