The Board of Education unanimously approved a new policy for Student Assignment that will begin with students entering transitional grades (kindergarten, sixth and ninth) in the fall of 2011.
The new system will continue to give families the option to choose from all SFUSD schools.
What is different is how students will be assigned to schools when there is more demand than available seats, and that where a student lives will play a more prominent role.
The new system will look at where a child lives and which schools the family selected and then use a set of preferences, including a new Census Track Integration Preference (CTIP), to determine a student’s placement offer.
Unlike the current system, the new system will be applied in different ways at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
Next Steps
The work to implement the new student assignment policy has begun, and it includes:
developing elementary school boundaries;
creating elementary to middle school feeder patterns;
developing a new transportation policy; and
creating a multilingual outreach and recruitment campaign and enrollment materials.
By the end of August 2010 we will share draft boundaries and recruitment information with the Board and public, during September we will gather feedback, and in October we will finalize the boundaries and enrollment materials so we are ready to launch the new enrollment system on November 13, 2010.
This next phase of the work will continue to be guided by public Board discussions and opportunities for community input.
