Ron Pang, Principal of Lincoln High School, Paul Cheng, Principal of Lowell High School, and William Hack, Assistant Principal of Claire Lilienthal K-8 School, attended the Fourth Annual Summer Program in Korea for American School Administrators.
The program is sponsored by the Foundation for SAT II Korean, Chungnam National University, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea. Thirty school administrators from various parts of the United States had the unique opportunity to learn about Korea, its people, language, history, and system of education.
The Foundation for SAT II Korean is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to promote Korean language and culture throughout the United States, and was founded in response fo the Korean American community’s desire to include Korean as a foreign language option on the Scholastic Aptitude Test II. As a result of the Foundation’s leadership, Korean was adopted in 1995 by the Educational Testing Service for the SAT II as the ninth foreign language. A growing number of students have taken the SAT II Korean language each year, and in November 2002, approximately 3,200 U.S. students took the test.
The Foundation also offers scholarships to middle and high school students enrolled in Korean language classes, provides scholarships to teachers enrolled in Korean language single subject teaching credential programs, organizes summer training programs, and provides financial support for Korean language textbook projects, and SAT II Korean practice tests. Chungnam National University, co-sponsor of the summer program, is one lf the largest and most prestigious public universities in Korea, located in Daejeon in the central region of the Korean peninsula.
Mr. Pang, Mr. Cheng, and Mr. Hack spent nine days in Daejeon and Seoul attending lectures and discussions covering Korean culture, the education system, and other relevant topics. They also toured high schools, Daeduk science and technology research complex, palaces, temples, museums, Chungnam University, the National Music and Performing Arts Center, the Demilitarized Zone, and various other cultural sites. The program was coordinated and hosted by UCLA Professor Ailee Moon who is also President of SAT II Korean. Evening banquets were hosted by the President of Chungnam National University, the Mayor of Daejeon, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Unification, and the Superintendents of Daejeon City School District.
