Every spring, for the last 6 years, Redding School’s 5th grade students and their teachers have taken a week-long field trip to Foothill Horizons in Sonora, California.

Here they get to experience learning in an outdoor classroom with naturalists and nature as their teachers. It is truly a first time, once in a lifetime experience for most of our students as they pet snakes, climb 165 feet down into a cavern, wade in near-freezing water and make fire without matches, to name a few experiences. They learn how the MeWuk tribe of Native Americans lived off the land, view the pitch-black night sky brimming with twinkling stars, and meet animals they’ve only seen in picture books or behind bars in cages. Their eyes and their vocabulary are stretched to include such sights and words as ‘stalagmite, stalactite, and oomacha.’ It is truly a learning experience....more »
